Curious about what I include in every knitting or crochet project bag? These are my top five favorite notions whether you are a beginner or are a seasoned yarn lover.
- Clover Soft Touch Crochet Hook is perfect to pick up dropped stitches or work a provisional cast on. I like the soft thumpad which means it isn’t slipping out of my hand while trying to maneuver tiny stitches.
- HiyaHiya Kitty Snips travel well! I have yet to have them confiscated by airport security. They have a cover so they won’t poke through your bag (or project).
- Knitter’s Pride Locking Stitch Markers easily mark the right or wrong side of your work, and can be attached at any point. Separate repeats, or use them as a progress keeper. I like to clip a few to the zipper pulls of my bags for easy access.
- Katrinkles Georgia Needle Gauge is cute and functional. No need to squint at the microprint size etched on your needles. Just try your needle in each hole, and the first one it moves all the way through without resistance is your winner.
- Clover Bent Tip Tapestry Needle Set is my favorite notion. It comes with 3 sizes and the bent tips make it incredibly easy to weave in ends, or put in an afterthought lifeline.
The Baggu Dopp Kit zipper bag is a shop favorite.They’re sturdy and collapse flat when not in use. They can take a beating on your commute, playground, hike, or travel. It has an interior zip pocket, and two slip pockets.

A tape measure!
I love the Kitty Snips. The little chain allows me to attach it to a zipper pull on a project bag. I also use the light bulb shaped stitch markers to pin snips and tapestry needles to the inside of bags without a zipper pull. All really useful items. And soo cute.
I love your list, Janine, and add to those items a pen or pencil and paper, calculator, ESK tape measure, and a row counter.

I have a tiny pocket sized tea tin that I use to store stitch markers, yarn needles, beads for beaded projects, etc. on the go. I couldn’t do without it!
I use a lot of the tiny gold stitch markers. They keep all my pattern repeats nice and tidy without a lot of extra weight on the circular needles. I keep a few in every project bag.
I’m always reaching for removable stitch markers to keep track of repeats, rows, hold dropped stitches …
Great list! Scissors / snips for sure. I also have a small notion that is maybe the size of a needle but is pointy on one end and has a crochet hook on the other.
I keep a dentist sample size dental floss in my bag for lifelines, beading, emergency stitch markers or y’know, after lunch….. in a pinch, I can even use it to cut thin yarn ends.
I actually have everything on your list because I can’t resist a good gadget, but I can MacGyver most things if I have to (even if I have to cut yarn with my teeth!) The thing that is always next to me is a row counter. I have finally settled on this one: https://www.amazon.com/Clover-Knitting-Stitch-Counter-Kacha-Kacha/dp/B000WUXO4W , since it locks and I have been known to gain rows on the free-wheeling counters when transporting projects.
I have several notions I always keep next to me as they seem to constantly be needed: small scissors, pens, crochet hook, tape measure, and a small plastic container with stitch markers, tapestry needles, and a row counter. Everything is placed in a rectangle zippered pouch that I can grab and put in my project bag if I go out.
My go-to notion is pretty stitch markers! 🙂
